A Magical Opportunity at Winfield House
Magic has taken me to places I’d never have dreamed of setting foot in. One of the most memorable? Winfield House in Regent’s Park, the official residence of the US Ambassador to the UK. It’s not exactly a venue you can casually pop into for a cuppa — getting in involved more security checks than an international airport. But once inside, it was truly magical in every sense of the word.
Stringent Security Checks
The journey to perform there began with the kind of vetting process that makes you wonder if MI5 has a file on your childhood pets. My National Insurance number, CRB checks, and a full background review were just the start. On arrival, my car was subjected to a level of scrutiny worthy of a Hollywood spy film: armed guards inspected every inch, mirrors swept under the chassis, the bonnet was popped, and the vehicle was swabbed for explosives. All this just to deliver a magic show! Needless to say, I’ve never felt so important—or so nervous.
Transforming the Drawing Room for a Magician for Events
Once inside, though, the atmosphere was entirely different. The drawing room, I was assured by one of the staff, was a far livelier setting for today’s event than its usual fare of stuffy, boring drinks parties. And lively it was! Over the course of the day, I performed two 45-minute magic shows for the children, each of whom left with a souvenir: a $1,000,000 bill. Let me tell you, that fake cash went down a treat — you’d think I’d handed out actual gold bars.
A Festive Extravaganza
The event was a Christmas extravaganza, complete with Father Christmas, carol singers, and an endless supply of food and drink. When I wasn’t performing for the kids, I mingled with the adults, wowing them with close-up magic. It’s not every day you’re rubbing shoulders with diplomats and dignitaries, and the experience was as fascinating as it was surreal. At one point, I even asked a particularly distinguished-looking guest what their role was, only to receive the cool response: “I’m the Ambassador.” Well, that’s me told.
