Every year, without fail, the last week of the school holidays catches parents off guard. Six weeks have gone past in a blur of days out, sleepovers and, if you’re anything like the families I meet, more screen time than anyone intended. And then, suddenly, you’re looking at the calendar thinking: we should do something.
I’ve been performing children’s magic shows across London for over 25 years, and late July and August are among the busiest weeks of my year. Families want one proper send-off before September arrives. Something the children will actually remember when they’re back at their desks on the first day of term.
So here are some back to school party ideas that genuinely work in London, along with a few thoughts on how to make the last week of summer feel like it deserves.
Why The End Of The Holidays Are Worth Celebrating
We throw parties for birthdays, for Christmas, for the start of school. But the end of the summer? That’s its own milestone. Children have had six weeks of freedom and marking the end of that together, with their friends, before everyone disappears into different classrooms, creates the kind of memory they carry forward.
It doesn’t have to be a big production. It just needs one thing that makes it feel like an occasion.
Ideas that work well for London families
I’m obviously biased here, but a live magic show is consistently one of the activities children talk about longest after the event. It’s interactive, it runs itself with no games to organise or crafts to supervise, and it holds the attention of even the most excitable groups.
A Children’s Magic Show
My show involves children in every trick from the first moment to the last. There’s a live white rabbit, magic wands for everyone to take home, and the kind of chaos that happens when fifteen children all try to say the magic words at the same time. It’s loud. It’s brilliant.
A Park Picnic With An Entertainer
Brockwell Park, Clapham Common, Crystal Palace, Dulwich Park, Peckham Rye: London parks are at their best in August. Combine a proper picnic with a professional entertainer and you’ve got an afternoon that feels effortless for parents and genuinely special for children. I perform outdoors regularly, and the moment the rabbit appears in a park setting is something families tend to photograph and keep.
A Themed Scavenger Hunt With a Magical Finale
For slightly older children, seven and above, a neighbourhood or park treasure hunt with clues leading to a magic performance at the end works brilliantly. Give them something to solve first, then the magic show becomes the reward. They love it.
A Back-To-School Sleepover For Older Children
For nines and above, a sleepover on the last weekend of the holidays often lands better than a daytime party. Add a magic and mind-reading show early in the evening. My 9+ format is designed for this age group specifically, closer to a proper mentalism performance than a party magic show, and you’ve given them something to puzzle over all night.
A Few Practical Tips For Planning An End-Of-Summer Party In London
- Book any entertainment at least three or four weeks ahead. August weekends in London fill up faster than people expect.
- If you’re going outdoors, have a rough indoor Plan B. A neighbour’s living room or local hall is usually enough.
- Keep numbers manageable. Ten to fifteen children is often a better party than twenty-five, especially at home.
- Give it a name. “Last Summer Hurrah” party, “End of Holiday Bash”: children respond to a named occasion.
How Long Should An End-Of-Summer Party Be?
For primary school ages, an hour and a half to two hours is usually the sweet spot. Long enough to feel like a proper event and short enough that energy stays high throughout.
If you’re including a magic show, which typically runs 45 to 60 minutes, plus food and arrivals, two hours works perfectly.
